The short version
Maestra is an app for practising spoken Spanish. You must be 13 or older to use it with your own account. Practising with Maestra's lessons is free. Some extras that cost us money to run will come with a paid plan; nothing is for sale yet. When it is, plans renew automatically until you cancel, and our Refund and Cancellation Policy says how refunds work. Be decent: don't misuse Maestra, don't upload things you don't have the right to share, and don't put other people's private information into Maestra. Lessons a teacher builds belong to the teacher. Parts of Maestra use AI, which can be wrong, so check what it gives you. We work hard to keep Maestra running, but we can't promise it will always be perfect, and our liability is limited. If we change these terms in an important way, we'll tell you first. Our Privacy Policy explains what we do with your data.
1. Agreeing to these terms
By using Maestra you agree to these terms and to the Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Maestra.
If you are under 18, please read these terms with a parent or guardian. They should agree to them too, especially before anything is bought.
[PLANNED] If you use Maestra for a school, your school may sign its own agreement with us. Where that agreement and these terms disagree about school data or the school's use of Maestra, the school's agreement wins.
2. Who can use Maestra
- You must be 13 or older to use Maestra with your own account; by signing up you confirm you are. If you are under 13, don't make an account; if we learn one exists, we will close it.
- [PLANNED] The school exception. A student under 13 will be able to use Maestra only through a school or district that has approved Maestra and signed a data agreement with us. The school consents for educational use. That student will use their school sign-in only, and won't be able to add a personal sign-in or buy anything.
- Teacher and parent accounts are for adults.
- You can't use Maestra if the law where you live forbids it, or if we have closed your account before for breaking these terms.
3. Your account
- An account is optional. You can practise on the Mac (the CLI) or in the web app without one; your practice is still sent to us under a random device id (see the Privacy Policy).
- You sign in with your email address: we send you a link, and opening it signs you in. The CLI signs in with a short code you approve in the web app. [PLANNED] Signing in with Google or Apple, and linking a school account.
- Keep access to your email safe, and tell us at hola@mdolabs.dev if you think someone else has used your account.
- Give us true information, especially about your age.
- One account is for one person. Don't share it or sell it.
- Account types. A learner account is for practising. [PLANNED] A teacher / parent account is also a learner account, and adds Classes (or a family) for the people you teach or look after.
4. [PLANNED] Classes, families and schools
- Joining a class. A teacher invites you with a link or a class code. Joining is free, and a class student is never shown a price. If we ever want to show a teacher more, you will be asked to accept again first. The Privacy Policy (section 7) says how this works. Before you join, Maestra shows you exactly what your teacher will see — the same words in the app, on the web and here:
Your teacher sees: your practice minutes and practice days, the phrases you said right, the pages you read, the lessons and readings you finish, and the mistakes you keep making, as rules (like “buenas tardes · singular and plural”).
Your teacher never sees: recordings (none are kept), transcripts, what you say or type, your score on any answer, your chats, or anything you practise outside this class’s course.
You can leave the class at any time in Settings → Class. When you leave, your teacher no longer sees what you practised in it, only that you left.
- Teaching a class. A class needs the Teacher plan or its free trial; the plan covers up to 40 students across all your classes, and its price is shown before you buy, on the web. When you make a class you confirm your students are 13 or older. If your plan ends, your classes pause: no new students, assignments or nudges, but you keep a read-only view of your class and its spreadsheet, and your students keep everything they learned. Renewing the plan unpauses them. Nudges are short and friendly: no links, no contact details.
- Linking a parent. A parent will be able to link to a teenager's account with a code, only if the teen accepts. Either side can unlink at any time. A linked parent can set some options for the teen (daily goal, reminders, and whether some features are on).
- Teachers' responsibilities. If you teach with Maestra, you are responsible for using it the way your school allows, including any school rules on apps and student data.
- Schools. A school that signs an agreement with us will be able to set policies for its students (for example, turning off
h, AI features or voice features) and pay by invoice. The school's agreement covers its students' data.
5. Plans, prices and billing
5.1 What is free
Every learner gets, free: the drill, reviews, translations of the prompts (t), streaks, progress, and all of Maestra's shipped lessons. Maestra's lessons are never behind a paywall, and the drill is never capped. Features that run on your own device cost us nothing and are free.
5.2 Paid plans and tokens
Some features cost us money every time they run on our server, for example chat, audio for your own files, and other AI features. Those are paid for with tokens:
- A free account comes with a smaller number of tokens each month, and a paid plan (monthly or yearly) with more. You need an account for either: without one there are no tokens. Plan tokens don't roll over: they start again each month on your plan's renewal date (for a free account, the day of the month you signed up).
- Token packs can be bought at any time. Bought tokens never expire. Plan tokens are used first, then bought tokens.
- When you run out, the features that need tokens stop until your plan's tokens come back, unless you buy more or upgrade, and Maestra tells you when that is. Everything else keeps working.
- During the beta every account that signs up gets the paid plan free, as a trial, until 31 December 2026. After that it is a free account unless you choose to buy. We will tell you before the trial ends and before anything is charged.
- [UNDECIDED] Which features need tokens, how many each uses, and the plan prices. We show all of them before you buy.
- [PLANNED] A teacher's plan pays for their class students' use of Maestra's server features. Class students are never shown a price, a plan to buy or a token count.
Prices are shown before tax. Tax is added at checkout, based on where you are. The price, what's included, and how often you'll be charged are shown before you buy.
5.3 Automatic renewal, changing plans and cancelling
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period (monthly or yearly), at the price shown when you bought, until you cancel. We'll tell you before a price changes, and you can cancel before it applies.
- Upgrading to a more expensive plan takes effect at once, with credit for the unused part of what you already paid. Downgrading, switching to yearly billing, and cancelling take effect at the end of the period you have paid for.
- How to cancel: in Maestra's Settings → Plan → Manage billing, or by emailing hola@mdolabs.dev.
- When you cancel, you keep the paid features until the end of the period you've paid for. Then your account goes back to free. Your progress and your lessons stay.
5.4 Refunds
See our Refund and Cancellation Policy. In short: ask within 7 days of a monthly charge or 30 days of a yearly one for a full refund, and a charge made by mistake is always refunded.
5.5 Payments
Payments are handled by Stripe, on a checkout page Stripe runs. We never see your card number. The iPhone, iPad and Android apps are paused, so there are no App Store or Google Play purchases.
5.6 [PLANNED] Who pays for whom
- A learner whose school or family provides a feature will see "provided by your school" or "provided by your family" instead of a price.
- Referral credits: if you refer someone who pays, you may earn a free month. The rules will be shown in the app. Credits have no cash value.
6. Using Maestra fairly
Don't:
- break the law, or help anyone else break it, using Maestra;
- harass, bully, threaten or embarrass anyone, including in lessons, chats or class names;
- try to get into accounts, classes or data that aren't yours;
- try to break, overload, copy or take apart Maestra, get around limits or tokens, or scrape it;
- use Maestra's server as a general translation, speech or AI service, or call it from anything but Maestra;
- use automated tools against Maestra, except the teacher AI connector in the way it's meant to be used;
- pretend to be someone else, or pretend to be a teacher or school when you aren't;
- use a school's access for something other than the school's teaching;
- resell Maestra or its lessons.
6.1 Your own files and web pages
My files lets you read your own texts and web pages with Maestra. Only add material you have the right to use. If you ask for audio for a file, its sentences are sent to our server to be read aloud (see the Privacy Policy).
6.2 [PLANNED] Lessons you build, and the lesson builder
If you build lessons (with the lesson builder, by editing, from a photo, or through your AI assistant):
- Only use material you have the right to use. Don't photograph or copy a whole textbook, test or worksheet you don't have permission to reuse.
- Keep students' private information out. Photograph a blank copy of a quiz, with no student names, grades or handwriting. Don't put students' names or personal details into a lesson.
- Make lessons suitable for your learners. Lessons can reach teenagers. Nothing sexual, hateful, violent for its own sake, or otherwise inappropriate for a classroom.
- You're responsible for what you publish to a class. Building a lesson and publishing it to a class are separate steps; look at a lesson before your students see it.
- Use the builder for language lessons, not as a general AI chatbot.
- We may apply limits (for example, how many lessons you can build a month) to keep the service fair and affordable.
6.3 [PLANNED] The teacher AI connector
If you connect your own AI assistant to Maestra (a feature of the paid teacher plan):
- You must acknowledge, when you connect, that answers about your classes are sent to your AI provider, which we don't control. That provider's terms and privacy policy apply to what it receives.
- Only connect it if your school allows it. Your school may turn it off for its classes.
- You're responsible for what your assistant does in Maestra on your behalf (for example, assigning work). Maestra logs these actions so you can see and undo them.
7. Your content, and ours
7.1 Yours
- Your practice data is yours. You can export or delete it (see the Privacy Policy).
- Your own files stay yours, and stay on your device.
- [PLANNED] Lessons a teacher builds belong to the teacher. You give us a limited licence to store, copy, process and show those lessons only so Maestra can work: to keep them in your account, to send them to your AI provider or ours to build or edit them, and to show them to the students and classes you share them with. This licence ends when you delete the lesson or your account, apart from our normal backup cycle.
- We don't use your lessons for anything else, such as publishing them to other teachers or training AI models, without your permission.
- Your own replies, and anything you type into
h, are yours too. - Feedback. If you send us ideas or report a bad phrase, we may use that feedback to improve Maestra without paying you or owing you anything.
7.2 Ours
- Maestra's software, design, name and shipped lessons (including the story, characters and audio) belong to MDO Labs LLC or its licensors. You can use them to learn and to teach with Maestra. You can't copy them into another product, sell them, or publish them elsewhere without our permission.
- A teacher may show Maestra's lessons to a class, and quote short parts of them in their own teaching materials.
7.3 Copyright complaints
If you think something in Maestra infringes your copyright, email hola@mdolabs.dev with details. We'll look into it and remove material where we should.
8. AI in Maestra
Parts of Maestra use AI or automatic tools, on your device or on our server: scoring your answers, translation help (h), turning speech into text, reading Spanish aloud, chat, and fetching web pages for My files. [PLANNED] The lesson builder and lesson tests.
- AI can be wrong. A translation can be awkward or incorrect. A correction can be wrong. A score can be unfair. Check what matters, and use your own judgement.
- Speech recognition can mishear you. Maestra always shows you what it heard. If it got you wrong, grade yourself.
- Scores are feedback, not a verdict. A score is about the text of one answer. It does not measure your pronunciation, your accent, or your overall Spanish.
- Your own grade (
c/x) is the record in practice. Maestra's score is advice, and your grade always overrides it. - Characters in chat are fictional, and what they say is made up by an AI model.
- [PLANNED] Teachers: a lesson test or success rating is not a grade on its own. Use your professional judgement before using any Maestra number in a student's grade.
- Nothing Maestra produces is professional translation, legal, medical or other advice. Don't rely on it where a mistake could hurt someone.
9. Service availability and changes
- We try to keep Maestra working, but it may sometimes be slow, unavailable, or have bugs, including during updates and maintenance.
- Much of Maestra works offline, but some features need your device to support them or need a connection to our server: scoring on our server, translation when your device can't translate, cloud speech to text, the lessons' voice for corrections, chat, and web pages in My files. We don't promise every feature on every device.
- Our server has a daily spending limit. When it is reached, server features rest until the next day and Maestra falls back to your device, or to grading yourself.
- We may change, add or remove features. If we remove a paid feature you are paying for, we'll tell you ahead of time, and you can cancel.
- Old versions of Maestra may stop working with our server, and you may need to update.
10. Ending your use of Maestra
- You can stop any time, and delete your account in Settings (delete my account) or by emailing hola@mdolabs.dev. Deleting it cancels a paid plan.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts other people at risk, or that the law requires us to close. Where it's reasonable, we'll warn you first and give you a chance to fix it or export your data. If we close an account without a good reason, we'll refund any unused prepaid time.
- [PLANNED] A school can end its agreement. Then its students lose school-provided access. Students 13 and over with a personal sign-in keep their personal account; under-13 school-only accounts are deleted. See the Privacy Policy.
- Sections that should survive the end of these terms (such as 7, 11, 12 and 14) do.
11. Disclaimers
Maestra is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises beyond those in these terms: no promise that Maestra will be error-free, uninterrupted, or fit for a particular purpose, and no promise that you will reach any level of Spanish. Some places don't allow some of these exclusions, so they may not all apply to you. Nothing here takes away rights you have under consumer law that can't be taken away.
12. Limits on our liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses (such as lost profits or lost data you could have backed up), and
- our total liability to you for everything related to Maestra is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and
[AMOUNT, e.g. US$50].
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't legally be limited, such as for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
13. Indemnity
If you use Maestra as a teacher or school and someone makes a claim against us because of content you uploaded or your breach of these terms, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of that claim.
14. Disputes and governing law
- These terms are governed by the laws of
[GOVERNING LAW / STATE]. - Disputes go to the courts of
[JURISDICTION]. - Please contact us first at hola@mdolabs.dev; most problems can be sorted out quickly.
- If you're a consumer, you may also have the right to bring a claim where you live.
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change is important, we'll tell you in the app or by email at least [30] DAYS before it applies. If you keep using Maestra after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree, you can cancel and delete your account before they take effect.
16. Everything else
- These terms, the Privacy Policy, the Refund and Cancellation Policy, and any school agreement are the whole agreement between you and us about Maestra.
- If one part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If we don't enforce something straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- You can't transfer your rights under these terms to someone else. We may transfer ours to a company that takes over Maestra, and it must keep these terms.
