How it works
No tiles to tap, no sentences to drag around. Just the part of a language that's actually hard: saying something back.
Hear it
A Spanish voice from Mexico asks you something real, with a short hint like a friend is asking so you know the situation.
Say it out loud
Answer the way you would to a person. There's usually more than one good answer, and Maestra shows you the others.
See how you did
The answer appears and is spoken. Where your device can listen, you also get a score for the words you said. It checks what you said, not your accent. Then you call it: got it or not yet.
Free, forever
Every lesson is free, from your first hola to the last lesson we've written.
Lessons, reviews, streaks, progress and the English for every line.
Beginner or not
Maestra follows the six CEFR levels, A1 to C2. A1 and A2 are written today: 21 lessons, plus school subjects and bonus lessons like soccer, surfing and gossip with friends. B1 to C2 are coming.
Your practice is yours
Teachers see class work only
If you join a class, your teacher sees the assignments they set. Practice you do on your own stays private.
What happens to your voice
Maestra never saves a recording. When your device can turn speech into text by itself, it does, and nothing leaves. Where it can't — most browsers — your answer is sent to Maestra to be turned into text by a speech-to-text service we use; we don't keep the recording. The microphone may be open while Maestra is talking, because a browser is slow to open one; anything picked up before your turn is thrown away. Scoring runs on your device unless you switch it to Maestra's server in Settings.
Works offline
Once the lessons are on your device, you can practise on the bus, with no signal.
